DirectSellingLive.com's 2009 Women of Power - The POWER 30
Hi. I’m Keeper, Founder and CEO of DirectSellingLive.com
Welcome to the 1st Annual DirectSellingLive.com Women of Power – The POWER 30.
For over 100 years network marketing/direct selling has touched the lives of 100’s of millions of people around the world through the sale of products or service, offering a way for individuals to better their lives financially through global business partnerships.
Over the past 100+ years direct selling has also seen 10’s of millions of distributors come and go. The majority of these distributors have been women. In fact today almost 80% of all distributors around the world are women. If we look back through our history I believe the numbers will show it has always been this way.
The Direct Selling industry, especially us men, owe a “HUGE” debt of gratitude to women who have made our industry possible, for direct selling has been built on the strong beautiful shoulders of women. From the United States to Japan, Australia to Mexico, Brazil to India, Russia to South Korea, Germany to Malaysia, and China it has been women who have bought more products, sold more products, used more products and built more businesses. However, when you look around the executive boardrooms in direct selling, it is men who are most often at the helm of direct selling companies and because of this it has been men who received most of the recognition.
DirectSellingLive.com’s 1st Annual Women of Power – The POWER 30 looks to recognize and say Thank You to the millions of women who over the past 100+ years are responsible for bringing direct selling to where we are today and to those who are in a position to lead us into the future.
Women like #1 Andrea Jung (DirectSellingLive’s Direct Selling Power Player of the Decade) who leads to largest direct selling company in the world – AVON. #2 Nicki Keohohou and # 4 Grace Keohohou (Direct Selling Women’s Alliance - DSWA) who are both building the fastest growing association in direct selling. #8 Nadine Thompson (Soul Purpose Lifestyle Company) and #27Traci Lynn (Traci Lynn Jewelry), two black women who have founded their own successful direct selling company’s - a sight not often seen in direct selling. Like #10 Doris Wood (Multi-Level Marketing International Association - MLMIA) who celebrated her 52nd year in direct selling in 2009 and is still going strong. # 16 Niousha Ehsan of the Direct Selling Education Institute in Dubai who is helping to increase awareness of direct selling in Asia. # 21 Miriam Muléy (85% Niche), a Latina, the premier industry consultant educating direct selling to the buying power of the minority communities.
DirectSellingLive recognizes that network marketing/direct selling is made up of both men and women from all walks of life. We are an industry with an all inclusive attitude which says, “You are welcome as long as you are willing to bring positive energy and are willing to uplift others.”
The DirectSellingLive’s Women of POWER – The POWER 30 does not discriminate in any way for the shear beauty of direct selling is we are an industry that attracts every race, nationality, color, religion, age, economic standing, educational background, political view and sexual orientation. In DirectSellingLive’s Women of Power – The POWER 30 we look to celebrate all these differences that help to make us the largest business community in the world.
We recognize that direct selling is a living, breathing, emotional entity full of all the ebbs and flows that life has to offer. With that said, DirectSellingLive.com not only looks to highlight our differences, we look to celebrate them so that we may better understand who we are as a people - as a community. We believe that once we begin to celebrate our differences we will be in a better position to be the guiding example to the world of what can be.
In the direct selling there is one central theme that runs through all of us…”look to improve ours lives as we look first to improve the lives those we come in contact with every day.”
Ladies it is with profound gratitude and thanks that I say…”We celebrate you!”
And now the Women of Power – The POWER 30!

Kara_Kowalski_Face_.jpg
#29 Kara Kowalski - Openly Gay Distributor, Pre-Paid Legal & Industry Pioneer
The world is rapidly changing and with change comes new ideas, new concepts and new paradigms. Change waits for no one. No one knows more about having to shift from old paradigms or having to embrace new ways of thinking than direct sellers. In 2009 a new paradigm shift began taking shape in direct selling - the rise and acceptance of the Gay and Lesbian distributor. The Gay and Lesbian community is a social, economic and political force that direct selling can no longer afford to pretend is not among its ranks. For years it has been taboo to even suggest that gays and lesbians could be in direct selling. Not any more.
DirectSellingLive.com is proud to honor successful Pre-Paid Legal distributor Kara Kowalski on the Women of Power - The POWER 30. In just two short years she has built a very successful Pre-Paid Legal organization. In 2009 Kara has taken the bold and courageous step in coming out to the direct selling community. Kara is letting the industry know that the gay and lesbian community is among us and they are here to stay, and she’s letting others in the gay and lesbian community know that direct selling has place for them. DirectSellingLive.com salutes Pre-Paid Legal and Kara Kowalski. Truly a woman of power and courage.

Madame_C_J_Walker.jpg
Madame CJ Walker - The Mother of Network Marketing & The Worlds First Female Self-Made Millionaire
2009 DirectSellingLive.com's Legend of the Year
Madam CJ Walker – 1867–1919
Founder of Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Co.
Founded: 1905
“I got my start by giving myself a start.”—Madam C.J. Walker
Born to former slaves and with little formal education, Madam C. J. Walker went on to be proclaimed the first self-made female millionaire by The Guinness Book of World Records. The United States Postal Service recognized her achievements by honoring her with a postage stamp. She is an Industry Legend because of the brilliant marketing and sales strategies she employed and because of all the women she empowered. Walker enabled literally thousands of black women to go into business for themselves.
At age thirty-nine, Walker, a single mother, went into business for herself. She began by making her own hair care products in a bathtub and giving free demonstrations. In time she recruited a sales force of satisfied customers who earned commissions on the sales they made.
(Excerpts from http://www.evancarmichael.com/Famous-Entrepreneurs/)
“Walker knew who her market was and she knew what she had to do to reach them. Walker knew that the majority of black women at the time were unable to read. Thus, she began a uniquely successful campaign of face to face network marketing. During a time when direct selling companies were employing typical door-to-door sales strategies, Madam C.J. Walker taught her “Walker Agents” how to recruit and teach others.
“Walker was sure to hire a vast range of candidates from within her target market. By helping them set up their own salons and letting them continue to work in their own locality, Walker was trying to utilize all of their unique networks to her advantage. At a time when most black women in the U.S. were menial workers and had little chance of improving their lot in life, Walker gave them not only hope, but also opportunity.
“I am not satisfied in making money for myself,” Walker said. “I endeavor to provide employment for hundreds of the women of my race.”
In another brilliant move, Walker moved her entire operation to Indianapolis because that’s where eight railway systems intersected and it would help her distribute her products.
“By 1913, her company had a sales force over 20,000 strong throughout not only the U.S., but also Central America and the Caribbean. Walker made it her business to hire the very women who would be interested in using her products.
“By 1917 annual conventions were being held by “Walker Agents” to train new and old recruits. They were distinct in their white uniforms and black beauty supplies case.
“By the time she died in 1919, she was 51 years old and one of the richest women in the country.”
Madam C J Walker
